Description

Back in March, I needed a target to fill some time between two other targets, so on a whim I put globular cluster M13 into the mix. I don't normally like to image globular clusters (although they are fun to look at in the eyepiece), but after several revisions, this one came out okay. They're hard to process!

This is globular cluster M13, also known as the Hercules Cluster. Globular clusters are extremely cool objects; they are dense, gravitationally-bound collections of hundreds of thousands of stars in a small area. This one is 145 lightyears across, and contains several hundred thousand stars. If you compare the density of stars in M13 to our own stellar neighborhood, M13 is 100 times denser -- imagine seeing 100x more stars are bright as Sirius and Vega in the sky!

Globular clusters tend to live in the halos of galaxies; this one is around 22,000 lightyears away from us. They are also extremely old; there are some theories that suggest that some may actually have formed before galaxies. M13 is 11.65 billion years old, compared to the Milky Way's age of 13.5 billion years.
